Because you're unlikely to shop twice for a wedding photographer, at least not intentionally, it's impossible for you to benefit from past experience. On the other hand, everyone is very familiar with grocery shopping. The processes and behaviors involved, can help you make better choices.
Are you the type of person who’s more likely to go to a grocery store, without any idea of what you’re going to eat tonight, look around the aisles, hoping to get inspired? Or are you the type who’s more likely to think about what you want to eat ahead of time, check for the items you already have, then make a list of what you'll need to purchase, before setting out to shop? There's no denying it, depending on the kind of day we’re having, most of us will occasionally fall into this trap. We walk around aimlessly, trying to make up our minds! More often than not, it leads to confusion and frustration, resulting in "get it over with" choices and ultimately, deceptive results. It has nothing to do with luck. It's avoidable!
What about menu choices? Are they different if you're having guests or hosting an important event? Most of us adapt our choices to suit the occasion. Case and point, no one would serve macaroni & cheese to celebrate Thanksgiving! Low budget meals have their place and budgeting accordingly, is only common sense!
Indeed, shopping for a photographer does have a lot in common with grocery shopping. The major difference being that, unlike every day meal choices, which can easily be improved as early as the next meal, wedding photo choices cannot! After the fact, nothing in this world can bring back the moments or change the results. That's a very sobering thought!
Take the time to write down all that’s important to you, in a photographer. Develop an idea of the types of photos that you like and don’t like. Have a list of items that you'll need, such as albums, prints, etc. Quality choices are important for this menu. As discussed in a previous article, have a realistic budget, suited to the importance of the occasion. All of these strategies steer you away from impulsive or irrational decisions and focus your mind on logical choices instead.
